General Community / Boeing whistleblower found dead in US.
« เมื่อ: 12/03/24, 11:25:51 »
A former Boeing employee known for raising concerns about the firm's production standards has been found dead in the US.

John Barnett had worked for Boeing for 32 years, until his retirement in 2017.

In the days before his death, he had been giving evidence in a whistleblower lawsuit against the company.

Boeing said it was saddened to ยูฟ่าเบท hear of Mr Barnett's passing. The Charleston County coroner confirmed his death to the BBC on Monday.

It said the 62-year-old had died from a "self-inflicted" wound on 9 March and police were investigating.

Mr Barnett had worked for the US plane giant for 32 years, until his retirement in 2017 on health grounds.

From 2010, he worked as a quality manager at the North Charleston plant making the 787 Dreamliner, a state-of-the-art airliner used mainly on long-haul routes.

A UN team has concluded there are "reasonable grounds to believe" sexual violence, including rape and gang rape, was committed during the Hamas attacks in Israel on 7 October.

They also said there was "convincing information" that hostages had been subjected to sexual violence.

The trip was led by Pramila Patten, the UN Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict.

Hamas has denied its gunmen ufabet sexually assaulted women during the attacks.

"The mission team found that there are reasonable grounds to believe that conflict-related sexual violence occurred in multiple locations during the 7 October attacks," the UN report said.

These happened in at least three locations - the Nova music festival site and its surroundings, Road 232, and Kibbutz Re'im, it added.

Hamas gunmen infiltrated southern Israel on 7 October - killing about 1,200 people and taking 253 others hostage.

Israel responded by launching a military campaign in Gaza, during which 30,500 people have been killed, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.

Reports of sexual violence carried out by Hamas - which is proscribed as a terrorist organisation by Israel, the UK and others - began to emerge soon after 7 October and have accumulated steadily ever since.

General Community / Biden and Trump head to border for high-stakes duel.
« เมื่อ: 29/02/24, 15:15:47 »
Joe Biden and Donald Trump will both travel to the US-Mexico border on Thursday, locked in a high-stakes political duel on an issue that could ultimately decide the US presidential election.

That border was crossed last year by 2.5 million undocumented migrants, an influx that has overwhelmed แทงบอลufa processing facilities and pushed social services in major American cities to the brink.

The day provides an opportunity for Mr Biden to try to convince voters he is serious about immigration, while Mr Trump's own trip is yet another chance to shine a spotlight on an issue that has been the central focus of his political career.

November's general election is expected to be a Biden-Trump rematch, although the two candidates have not secured their respective parties' nomination quite yet.

Mr Trump is visiting Eagle Pass, the Texas border town where Republican Governor Greg Abbott has defied the Biden White House by using state National Guard soldiers to detain undocumented migrants and erect border barricades, including razor-wire fences that critics say are inhumane.

The former president is likely to tout these kind of aggressive measures and cite them as part of the reason why border crossings have dropped in Texas recently, while spiking in Arizona and California - states with Democratic governors.

The White House only announced Mr Biden's own visit to Brownsville, Texas, a few days ago and the president's trip is another indication that Democrats are scrambling to respond to an area of perceived weakness.

More than 6.3 million migrants have been detained crossing into the US illegally during Mr Biden's time in office - a higher number than under previous presidencies - though experts say the reasons for the spike are complex, with some factors pre-dating his government.

Police in India have fired teargas on protesting farmers who have resumed their march on capital Delhi after four rounds of talks with the federal government failed to end the deadlock.

The farmers, who are demanding assured prices for their crops, say they are prepared with months of supplies.

Delhi's borders have been fortified with several layers of barricades and barbed แทงบอลufadeal wires to stop their entry.

But protesters have warned they would use heavy machinery to push through.

On Wednesday, visuals from the Shambhu border between the neighbouring Punjab and Haryana states showed thousands of farmers preparing to push past barriers using bulldozers and earthmovers.

Police fired teargas at the protesters as they attempted to move towards the border, BBC Punjabi reported. Farmers seemed better prepared than last week as they used masks, gloves and safety suits to protect themselves from the shelling.

Many among the protesters flew kites to interfere with the police's operation of drones, which have been used to drop tear gas shells on them.

Farm leaders also made frequent announcements for unity, appealing to the security forces to not attack their "brethren".

Agriculture Minister Arjun Munde has invited farmers for a fifth round of talks. "It is important for us to maintain peace," he wrote on X (Formerly Twitter). Farmers are yet to respond to this invite.

Nawaz Sharif and Bilawal Bhutto's parties in Pakistan have reached a deal to form a government.

Mr Bhutto's PPP said it would help Mr Sharif's PML-N elect a prime minister after last week's election.

The two parties were previously in a coalition that ousted ufadeal Imran Khan from power in 2022.

This time, independent candidates backed by his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party unexpectedly won the most seats.

PPP leader Asif Ali Zardari told a press conference that although his party and PML-N had contested elections against each other, they had come together in the interests of the nation.

"It is not necessary that [we fight] forever," Mr Zardari said.

The PML-N said in a statement that both parties had agreed to cooperate in the interests of political stability.

The results - in which independents backed by the PTI took 93 out of 266 directly elected seats - had left voters uncertain about which parties would form the next government.

Mr Sharif's PML-N won 75 seats while Mr Bhutto's PPP came third with 54 seats.

In addition, parties will be allocated more seats from the 70 reserved for women and non-Muslims. These additional seats are not available to independent candidates.

According to PML-N official Marriyum Aurangzeb, party leader Mr Sharif plans to nominate his brother Shehbaz to be prime minister. Both men have previously served as prime minister.

While Mr Bhutto says his party will help elect a PML-N prime minister, he earlier said it would not take any cabinet positions.

Imran Khan and his party have continued to emphasise that they believe the elections were rigged against them and plan to challenge the results.

He said: "I warn against the misadventure of forming a government with stolen votes.

"Such daylight robbery will not only be a disrespect to the citizens but will also push the country's economy further into a downward spiral."

General Community / Hamas responds to proposed Gaza ceasefire plan.
« เมื่อ: 7/02/24, 14:53:37 »
Hamas says it has given its response to a framework proposal for a new ceasefire in Gaza.

The details of the deal - set out by Israel, the US, Qatar and Egypt - have not been released.

It was earlier reported to include a six-week truce, when more Israeli แทงบอลufabet hostages would be exchanged for Palestinian prisoners.

Israel and the US have both said they are reviewing Hamas's response.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who is currently in the Middle East, said he would discuss Hamas's response with officials in Israel on Wednesday.

While Mr Blinken has given no indication of how the US views the response, President Joe Biden described it as "a little over the top" - suggesting the Israeli leadership will not easily agree to what the group is asking.

A senior Hamas official told the BBC the group had presented a "positive vision" in response to the framework but had asked for some amendments relating to the rebuilding of Gaza, the return of its residents to their homes and the provisions for those who had been displaced.

The official said Hamas had also asked for changes relating to the treatment of those injured, including their return home and transfer to hospitals abroad.

General Community / North Korea sending Russia military equipment.
« เมื่อ: 14/10/23, 14:54:55 »
US officials have accused North Korea of supplying vast amounts of military hardware to Russia for use in Ukraine.

Pyongyang has supplied up to 1,000 containers of "equipment and munitions" in "recent weeks", National Security Council Spokesperson John Kirby said.

Officials also released photos of what they said were 300 containers assembled for transport in Najin, North Korea.

Last month, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visited Russia to discuss potential military cooperation.

Moscow's military is believed to be burning through huge amounts of artillery shells and missiles in its ongoing invasion of Ukraine, and has been seeking to replenish its supplies from some of its isolated allies.

Some analysts believe that Mr Kim's regime could be sitting on huge stores of arms, but could be reluctant to hand over too much given its relative lack of resources.

General Community / Rescue efforts continue as death toll rises.
« เมื่อ: 6/10/23, 13:35:11 »
Rescue operations have entered the third day after flash floods in India's north-eastern state of Sikkim left over 100 people missing, including 22 army personnel.

At least 19 people have died, officials said on Thursday night.

The massive floods were trigged by a cloudburst over a mountain lake this week.

The floods worsened after water was released from a nearby dam into the Teesta river.

Hundreds of search and rescue personnel have been deployed across the state and areas near the river remain on high alert.

More than 22,000 people have been affected by the floods with many stranded in Lachen and Lachung in northern Sikkim. The floods have disrupted mobile phone coverage in the area.

"As per the data available, around 3,000 people are stranded in Lachen and Lachung," state chief secretary VB Pathak said in a statement on Thursday night. "We will evacuate all with helicopters of [the Indian] Army and the Air Force."

From the beginning of Russia's full-on invasion, Warsaw has been a firm supporter of Kyiv.

It's often led the way in sending military aid and equipment, and argued passionately that this support is essential to protect Poland itself from Russian aggression.

The change of tone from the Polish government on Ukraine is startling.

Now suddenly it feels like the political knives are out for Kyiv.

There's talk of how Ukraine should be "grateful" for Polish support. This week came a warning from Poland's prime minister about ending weapons transfers, although others in his party then scrambled to soften that message.

But there was no misinterpreting the Polish President's words. Andrzej Duda compared Ukraine to a drowning man who risks dragging his rescuers down with him.

Moscow seized upon that comment with glee.

The sharp downturn in relations between the neighbouring countries began with a dispute over grain imports that remains unresolved.

Ukraine needs to export its harvest, and land routes are now critical because Russia is deliberately attacking ports on both the Black Sea and the Danube river. But in an effort to protect its own farmers, Poland won't allow cheaper Ukrainian grain to hit its domestic market, only to pass through to the rest of the European Union in transit.

General Community / China's seafood imports from Japan down 67% in August.
« เมื่อ: 21/09/23, 00:49:21 »
China's imports of seafood from Japan slumped last month as Tokyo started to release treated waste water from the damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant.

Imports of Japanese seafood fell 67.6% in August from the same month last year, China's customs authority said.

Japan's ministry of agriculture and fisheries says China was the world's top importer of the country's seafood.

Last year, Asia's largest economy imported 84.4 billion yen ($571m; £461m) of seafood from its neighbour.

The sharp fall came as Japan prepared to start releasing the waste water and in the aftermath of the release.

Since the 2011 tsunami which severely damaged the Fukushima nuclear plant, more than a million tonnes of treated waste water has accumulated there.

Japan began discharging it on 24 August, in a process that will take 30 years to complete. The same day China said it would ban all Japanese seafood imports.

Fishing industry groups in Japan and the wider region also expressed concerns at the time about the impact of the release on their livelihoods.

The Chinese import ban came despite Japan saying the water was safe, and many scientists agreeing. The United Nations' nuclear watchdog also approved the plan.

Tokyo has also stressed that similar releases of waste water are common from other nuclear power plants in China and France.

Japan makes regular reports to show that the seawater near Fukushima is showing no detectable levels of radioactivity.

China strongly protested the release, while disinformation prompted incidents such as rocks being thrown at Japanese schools in China and reports of hundreds of hostile phone calls to local businesses in Fukushima.

Tokyo has also warned its citizens visiting China to take precautions and avoid speaking Japanese loudly in public.

The Japanese government has promised financial help for the fishing industry, while the company running the Fukushima plant, Tepco, said it was prepared to compensate local businesses affected by the release.

The escalating row over the murder of a Sikh separatist leader has the potential to derail years of close relations between Canada and India, two key strategic partners on security and trade.

The rift burst into the open on Monday when Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canada was investigating "credible allegations" about the potential involvement of Indian government agents in the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia in June.

India responded furiously - it "completely rejected" the allegations, calling them "absurd". Both have expelled one of the other's diplomats and it's unclear how they now pull back from the brink.

Just a few months ago, the countries were making progress towards signing a free trade agreement - long in the works - this year. Now, talks are paused and an imminent Canadian trade mission to India postponed.

So how did things reach this point?

The recent G20 summit hosted by Delhi offered some hints, key among them Mr Trudeau's tense (and short) meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Then he suffered the embarrassment of having to wait in Delhi for two more days before he could leave after his plane developed a technical fault.

General Community / Japan firms cut ties with boyband agency over sex abuse.
« เมื่อ: 19/09/23, 14:52:01 »
Major Japanese brands are cutting ties with the country's biggest talent agency after it was engulfed by a sexual abuse scandal.

Firms including Nissan and Asahi say they will not renew any contracts with Johnny and Associates.

Toyota, which previously had a contract with one of its top stars, told the BBC it had no plans to sign any more deals featuring Johnny talents.

Japan's agriculture ministry has also said it would stop hiring the stars.

Johnny and Associates is Japan's biggest J-pop and boyband talent agency.

Last month, an independent investigation into the agency found its late founder, Johnny Kitagawa, had abused hundreds of boys and young men over a six-decade career as one of the most powerful entertainment figures in Japan.

A BBC documentary about Kitagawa was aired in March, prompting national debate and more J-pop stars to report their experiences of abuse.

Public pressure eventually led to the resignation earlier this month of Julie Fujishima, Kitagawa's niece who became the boss of Johnny & Associates when her uncle died in 2019.

Her resignation came after she publicly acknowledged for the first time the sexual abuse committed by her uncle.

Johnny Kitagawa's sexual abuse: Japan's worst kept secret
The following day, drinks giant Asahi Group Holdings announced it would pull ongoing television and online advertisements featuring the agency's stars.

"We should not book sales, even one yen, at the expense of human rights," its president, Atsushi Katsuki told the Asahi Shimbun newspaper.

Several other major brands followed.

Nissan Motors told the BBC: "Due to conduct by Johnny & Associates that contravenes our Human Rights Policy Statement, we will refrain from developing new sales promotion materials using that talent agency until further notice."

Some of the criticism includes how the agency's new boss, Noriyuki Higashiyama, also faces allegations of sexually assaulting young boys.

Others have questioned why the firm has chosen to retain the name of a sexual predator.

General Community / Labour will seek re-write of deal, Starmer says.
« เมื่อ: 18/09/23, 14:15:53 »
Sir Keir Starmer has said he will seek a "much better" Brexit deal with the EU if Labour wins the next general election.

The opposition leader told the Financial Times that the current deal, which is due for review in 2025, is "too thin".

Sir Keir was speaking at a conference of centre-left leaders in Montreal, Canada.

But he ruled out re-joining the customs union, the single market or the EU.

It remains unclear, however, if Brussels would be open to making major changes to the agreement, which was agreed by former Conservative Prime Minister Boris Johnson in 2021.

Sir Keir has repeatedly said he would not seek to rejoin the EU if his party comes to power, promising to "make Brexit work".

His party has consistently held double-digit leads in the political opinion polls, with a general election expected to take place some time in 2024.

"Almost everyone recognises the deal Johnson struck is not a good deal - it's far too thin," he told the Financial Times.

"As we go into 2025 we will attempt to get a much better deal for the UK," he said, although he did not specify what parts of the deal he would seek to improve.

He added that he was confident a better deal could be negotiated with Brussels, as well as a "closer trading relationship".

"We have to make it work. That's not a question of going back in, but I refuse to accept that we can't make it work," he said, adding that he was thinking about "future generations".

"I say that as a dad. I've got a 15-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl. I'm not going to let them grow up in a world where all I've got to say to them about their future is, it's going to be worse than it might otherwise have been.

"I've got an utter determination to make this work."

The Labour leader spent the weekend meeting fellow centre-left leaders in Canada, including the country's prime minister Justin Trudeau.

He is also expected to travel to Paris to meet French President Emmanuel Macron later this week, where post-Brexit relations are expected to feature heavily in talks.

A top US diplomat has questioned the absence of China's defence minister Li Shangfu, renewing speculation of a possible corruption purge.

General Li has been not seen in public for about two weeks and has reportedly missed several meetings.

Rahm Emanuel, the US envoy to Japan, speculated on Mr Li's absence, tweeting that the "unemployment rate" in the Chinese government was very high.

Mr Li's absence follows recent axings of several top military officials.

Citing sources in the US and China, The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday that Mr Li is being removed from his post.

It also comes months after foreign minister Qin Gang disappeared from public view. Mr Qin's sudden absence and replacement in July has still not been fully explained.

In Gen Li's case too, the Chinese government has not said much. When asked about it earlier this week, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman had reportedly said she was "not aware of the situation".

Gen Li's last public appearance was three weeks ago - on 29 August - in Beijing at a security forum with African nations. It is not unusual for defence ministers to be absent from the public view for a few weeks.

An aerospace engineer who began his career at a satellite and rocket launch centre, Gen Li has had a smooth ascent through the ranks of the military and Chinese political elite.

Just like Mr Qin, he is said to be a favourite of President Xi Jinping. He is also the second cabinet minister and state councillor, after Mr Qin, to have gone missing in recent months.

Flights at Gatwick Airport were cancelled, delayed or diverted at short notice on Thursday due to a shortage of air traffic controllers.

Gatwick confirmed 22 cancellations as of 22:00 BST, while the website FlightRadar24 said hundreds of flights in and out of the airport were delayed.

The National Air Traffic Services (Nats) apologised for its staffing shortages.

Gatwick Airport said it expected a normal service on Friday.

The disruption comes just over two weeks after a technical issue at Nats led to 2,000 flights being cancelled across the UK.

EasyJet expressed frustration at Thursday's delays and cancellations, while Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary called on Nats' boss to resign.

Mr O'Leary said: "It is unacceptable that more flights and hundreds of passengers are suffering delays to/from Gatwick Airport due to Nats CEO, Martin Rolfe's blatant failure to adequately staff UK ATC.

"Airlines are paying millions of pounds to Nats each and every year and should not have to see their passengers suffer avoidable delays due to UK ATC staff shortages."

General Community / Libyan rivals 'co-ordinating over flood relief'
« เมื่อ: 14/09/23, 12:46:34 »
The two rival governments in Libya are co-ordinating relief efforts for flood victims, the UN has said.

More than 5,300 people died after two dam bursts brought devastating floods to the eastern city of Derna.

At least 10,000 people are missing, and tens of thousands more have been displaced.

A UN official said that both the eastern and western governments had requested international aid and were liaising with each other.

In pictures: Desperate search for flood survivors
"Both governments have reached out to the international community requesting services and help," Tauhid Pasha, of the International Organisation for Migration, told BBC Radio 4's the World Tonight programme.

"The Government of National Unity [western government] has extended its support to us and its request on behalf of the entire country and they are also co-ordinating with the government in the east," he said.

"The challenge now is the international community responding accordingly to the needs and the requests of the governments," he added.

Mr Pasha said support needed to be scaled up "very, very quickly and to do so we need money".

In a rare testimony before US lawmakers, a Canadian politician has urged for co-operation between the two countries to combat foreign interference by Beijing.

Michael Chong was himself allegedly targeted by China for criticising its human rights record.

He was invited to speak about his experience before a US Congressional committee tasked with monitoring China.

He said Beijing's actions pose a "serious, national threat" to Canada.

"My experience is but one case of Beijing's interference in Canada," Mr Chong told the bipartisan committee on Monday. "Many, many other cases go unnoticed and unreported, and the victims suffer in silence."

Earlier this year, Canada accused China of targeting Mr Chong with a misinformation campaign on the popular messaging app WeChat.

Mr Chong said he also learned through Canadian intelligence that Beijing had been gathering information on him, as well as his relatives in Hong Kong, for the last three years. In 2021, Mr Chong put forward a motion in parliament that declared China's treatment of its Uyghur minority population a genocide.

China has repeatedly denied any attempts to intimidate Mr Chong or interfere in Canadian affairs.

In his testimony, the Conservative politician detailed other ways in which he said China has been observed interfering in his country.

This includes recruiting Chinese international students at Canadian universities, he said, who are then coerced by Beijing to spy on other students and activists seen as unfriendly to the Communist Party of China (CPC).

General Community / Thousands feared dead as flooding sweeps Libya.
« เมื่อ: 12/09/23, 14:03:20 »
Thousands of people are feared dead after a powerful storm triggered devastating flooding in Libya.

The leader of the east Libyan government, which is not recognised internationally, said deaths exceeded 2,000 and thousands were missing.

Jalel Harchaoui, a Libya specialist, told the BBC the death toll could reach as many as "several thousand" people.

Storm Daniel made landfall on Sunday, prompting authorities to declare a state of extreme emergency.

Seven Libyan army personnel went missing during ongoing rescue efforts.

Officials in the east imposed a curfew, while schools and shops were ordered to close

The eastern cities of Benghazi, Sousse, Derna and Al-Marj were all affected.

As well as the rising death toll, the Libyan Red Cross said that at least 150 homes had been destroyed.

General Community / How Russia and West agreed on Ukraine language.
« เมื่อ: 11/09/23, 15:43:23 »
The G20 joint declaration that avoids direct criticism of Russia for its war against Ukraine is being described as a significant diplomatic win for India.

The agreement of a joint statement in Delhi looked almost impossible a few days ago, given how sharply divided the group was over Russia's invasion of its neighbour.

In the end, we had a declaration that garnered unanimous support from all G20 member nations, without a single dissenting note.

Ukraine itself, which was not represented at the summit, was unhappy - though key players, including the US, the UK, Russia and China, praised the outcome.

So, how did India manage to bring together nations with starkly divergent views on Ukraine?

A close reading of the declaration and some geopolitical developments weeks before the summit offer some clues.

The five-nation Brics group - which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa - decided to include six new members during its annual summit in August.

The new members - Argentina, Ethiopia, Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE - have close ties with China.

The expansion may not have played a direct role in the outcome of the G20 summit but it's no secret that the West has been wary of China's growing clout, particularly in the developing world, in the past few years.

"It was not a direct factor but the West, especially the US, is conscious that China is effectively trying to create an alternative international order that is anti-Western," says Pramit Pal Chaudhuri, South Asia practice head of Eurasia Group.

What is also not a secret is that the West sees India as a counterweight to China and it would have not wanted Delhi's presidency to end without a declaration."

Shares in Apple have fallen for a second day in a row after reports that Chinese government workers have been banned from using iPhones.

The firm's stock market valuation has fallen by more than 6%, or almost $200bn (£160bn), in the past two days.

China is the technology giant's third-largest market, accounting for 18% of its total revenue last year.

It is also where most of Apple's products are manufactured by its biggest supplier Foxconn.

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on Wednesday that Beijing had ordered central government agency officials to not bring iPhones into the office or use them for work.

The following day, Bloomberg News reported that the ban may also be imposed on workers at state-owned companies and government-backed agencies.

The instructions not to use iPhones were given to officials by their superiors in recent weeks, sources told the WSJ. Restrictions were also placed on other foreign-branded devices.

iPhones were already banned in some agencies, the paper says, but its sources suggested this had now been widened.

It has not been made clear how widely those instructions were disseminated through Chinese officialdom.

The reports came ahead of the launch of the iPhone 15, which is expected to take place on 12 September.

On Chinese social media some people who said they work for state-owned companies reported being told to stop using Apple devices by the end of September. One joked that they were poor and did not have the money to buy a new phone: "What should I use for work?" they wondered.

A draft law banning speech and dressing "detrimental to the spirit of Chinese people" has sparked debate in China.

If the law comes into force, people found guilty could be fined or jailed but the proposal does not yet spell out what constitutes a violation.

Social media users and legal experts have called for more clarity to avoid excessive enforcement.

China recently released a swathe of proposed changes to its public security laws - the first reforms in decades.
The clothing law has drawn immediate reaction from the public - with many online criticising it as excessive and absurd.

The contentious clauses suggest that people who wear or force others to wear clothing and symbols that "undermine the spirit or hurt the feelings of the Chinese nation" could be detained for up to 15 days and fined up to 5,000 yuan ($680; £550).

Those who create or disseminate articles or speech that do so could also face the same punishment.

The proposed legal changes also forbid "insulting, slandering or otherwise infringing upon the names of local heroes and martyrs" as well as vandalism of their memorial statues.

Online, people questioned how law enforcers could unilaterally determine when the nation's "feelings" are "hurt".

"Will wearing a suit and tie count? Marxism originated in the West. Would its presence in China also count as hurting national feelings," one user posted on Chinese Twitter-like platform Weibo.

Legal experts in the country have also criticised the law's vague phrasing, saying it could be open to abuse.

Zhao Hong, a law professor at the Chinese University of Political Science and Law said the lack of clarity could lead to an infringement of personal rights.

"What if the law enforcer, usually a police officer, has a personal interpretation of the hurt and initiates moral judgment of others beyond the scope of law," she wrote in an article published on Wednesday.

Jenni Hermoso has filed a legal complaint over the kiss by Spanish football federation president Luis Rubiales.

Rubiales kissed Hermoso on the lips after Spain's World Cup final win, which she says was not consensual.

Rubiales claims the kiss was "mutual and "consensual", but has been provisionally suspended by football's world governing body Fifa.

The complaint means the 46-year-old could face criminal charges.

A statement from the national prosecutor's office said: "Jennifer Hermoso filed an express complaint for the facts that you all know.

"The national court's prosecutor's office will file a complaint as soon as possible. The statement took place at the state attorney general's office to protect the privacy of the victim."

On 29 August, Spanish prosecutors opened a preliminary investigation into whether the incident amounts to a crime of sexual assault.

At the time, Spain's top criminal court said it was opening its investigation in light of the "unequivocal nature" of 33-year-old Hermoso's statements, saying it was necessary "to determine their legal significance".

"Given the public statements made by Jennifer Hermoso, the sexual act she was subjected to by Luis Rubiales was not consensual," a statement said.

A short- video series has gone viral in China, amplifying calls for the British Museum to return Chinese artefacts.

It tells the story of a jade teapot, played by a woman, looking for its way back to China.

The world-renowned museum has been under pressure after 2,000 treasures were reported to be "missing, stolen or damaged" last month.

The scandal has prompted demands from China and other countries for treasures to be returned.

Titled Escape from the British Museum, the three-part series from two Chinese social media influencers tells the story of a jade teapot coming alive and taking a human form as she tries to escape from the museum.

Her wish? To return home to China, with the help of a Chinese journalist she meets on the streets of London.

The teapot is a real artefact - and relatively recent addition to the British Museum. It was made in 2011 by a Chinese artist who specialises in intricate jade carvings.

Though not exactly a cultural relic, the delicate technique used in the making of the pot is a craft unique to China and that has resonated with the Chinese public.

First released on China's version of TikTok, Douyin, the series has been played 270 million times on the platform. It has also seen its creators, who claim to be independent content makers, gaining more than five million followers on Chinese social media apps within one week.

The series has also been strongly endorsed by state media. State broadcaster CCTV gave it a pat on the back this week, saying: "We are very pleased to see Chinese young people are passionate about history and tradition… We are also looking forward to the early return of Chinese artefacts that have been displaced overseas".

General Community / Government's G20 invite from 'Bharat' sparks row.
« เมื่อ: 5/09/23, 21:10:10 »
A row has broken out in India after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government used the term "Bharat" in an official invite for the G20 Summit being sent on behalf of the president.

Bharat is the Hindi name for India.

The dinner invitation from President Droupadi Murmu to foreign leaders attending the summit describes her as "President of Bharat".

Several ministers from the ruling BJP party cheered the move, but opposition leaders questioned its purpose.

The move comes amid reports that the government is mulling changing the name of the country officially to Bharat - but there has been no confirmation.

All of India's official websites still use the term "government of India" and Ms Murmu is still referred to as the President of India on X (formerly Twitter).

However, Bharat's use in the invite comes just two days after Mohan Bhagwat, the chief of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) - the ideological mentor of the BJP - said that the country should be called Bharat instead of India.

"At times we use India so those who speak English will understand. But we must stop using this. The name of the country Bharat will remain Bharat wherever you go in the world," Mr Bhagwat said.

On Tuesday, several BJP politicians welcome

General Community / Dozens injured after storm sweeps Taiwan.
« เมื่อ: 4/09/23, 16:18:09 »
More than 40 people were injured in Taiwan after Typhoon Haikui ripped across the island, uprooting trees and forcing thousands to evacuate.

The storm - which made landfall on Sunday on the east coast - was the first to directly hit the island in four years.

Amid torrential rain and high winds, two people in a mountainous region were hurt after a falling tree hit a car.

Dozens others were injured - mainly by falling debris, said officials.

The storm packed winds of up to 200km/h (124 mph) but have been no reports of deaths or any major structural damage.

On Monday, clean-up crews were working on restoring services after 160,000 homes lost power the previous day.

Although this is typhoon season in the Western Pacific - with 11 so far - Haikui is the first major storm to directly hit Taiwan in four years.

Australia has launched an urgent operation to rescue a researcher with a "developing medical condition" from the remote Casey outpost in Antarctica.

The icebreaker RSV Nuyina left from Tasmania last week, the Australian Antarctic Program (AAP) said.

It is travelling thousands of miles to reach the station after an air rescue was ruled out due to harsh conditions.

The AAP said the researcher, an Australian, needs specialist treatment but did not name the condition.

The programme added that it had taken weeks to prepare the Nuyina for the mission, including equipping it with helicopters.

Casey research station is a journey of 2,139 miles (3,443km) from Hobart in Tasmania and one of three permanent Antarctic stations run by the AAP.

The Nuyina, which cost A$528m ($342m; £271m) to build, has a top speed of 16 knots, or around 18 miles an hour, meaning a journey of several days.

It is understood that an evacuation by air was not possible - the nearby Wilkins aerodrome near Casey has an ice runway and is often unusable during the harsh winter.

According to reports the runway would need weeks of preparation to use, and therefore it is far quicker to send the icebreaker.

Medical facilities are limited on the research station, and only about 20 people live there during winter when conditions are at their worst.

A spokesman for the AAP told the BBC that the "wellbeing of our people is our highest priority".

"The expeditioner's family is being kept fully informed of the situation," it added. "All other personnel on stations are accounted for and safe."

General Community / Proud Boys leader Joe Biggs sentenced to 17 years.
« เมื่อ: 1/09/23, 18:46:35 »
A leader of the far-right Proud Boys has been sentenced to 17 years in prison, one of the longest terms yet handed out over the US Capitol riot.

US Army veteran Joe Biggs, 38, was an instigator of the storming of Congress on 6 January 2021, prosecutors said.

The former Infowars correspondent was convicted of seditious conspiracy and other charges in May.

In court, Biggs pleaded for leniency and expressed remorse for his actions.

The sentence, handed down by US District Judge Timothy Kelly, is below both federal sentencing guidelines and the 33 years sought by prosecutors.

Another Proud Boys member, Zachary Rehl, was sentenced on Thursday to 15 years, also on a charge of seditious conspiracy.

Rehl, a former US Marine and leader of the Philadelphia branch of the Proud Boys, was seen on video spraying a chemical irritant at officers outside the Capitol during the riot.

Biggs was convicted of a slew of charges in May, including seditious conspiracy, intimidation or threats to prevent officials from discharging their duties and interference with law enforcement during civil disorder.

In a sentencing memo, prosecutors said that Biggs - a veteran of the war in Iraq and former correspondent for conspiracy website Infowars - "employed his military experience to direct and control large groups of men under his command" to lead a "revolt against the government".

"Biggs viewed himself and his movement as a second American revolution where he and the other 'patriots' would retake the government by force," the memo said.

General Community / Nerves and patriotism in Moscow after 18 months of war.
« เมื่อ: 31/08/23, 18:52:14 »
Russia's imperial past looms large over Moscow. The Kremlin walls and towers make visitors feel like tiny specks on Red Square.

Five miles away, I get a similar feeling when I go to Victory Park. It is a sprawling complex of museums and memorials built to commemorate the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany. The centrepiece - a massive square with an obelisk 141.8m (465ft) high - 10cm for each day of the Great Patriotic War, as the Soviets called their part in World War Two after the Nazi invasion.

When I visit, it is National Day of the Russian Flag. An enormous tricolour - allegedly the largest in the country - is being unfurled on the square.

Ringed by rigid lines of Russian soldiers, the flag is unrolled as a military band plays patriotic music. The museum director gives a speech, stressing that such occasions "unite our people".

The Kremlin has been more actively encouraging patriotic events like these since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Inside the Victory Museum itself, I find an exhibition dedicated to the "heroes" of the "special military operation". Information boards compare Russian troops fighting in Ukraine to Soviet soldiers in WW2.

Andrei Afanasiev, a pro-Kremlin blogger and university lecturer, agrees to meet me. He tells me patriotism is more important during wartime, and that what he calls "the West's war on Russia" has made Russians realise that they're on their own.

"You can only rely on yourself, your country and your army. Definitely, patriotism is higher than it was before. War mobilises us and unites us," he says.

General Community / Dating app users rue missed connections amid outage.
« เมื่อ: 30/08/23, 17:55:41 »
Users of the dating app Coffee Meets Bagel have expressed frustration over an ongoing, multi-day system outage.

The CMB app - which sells itself as the one "for serious daters" - first went down on 27 August, blocking users from their budding romances.

It has now been down for three days with the firm's engineers saying they are working on a "system outage".

The app claims to have more than 10 million sign-ups worldwide, including many across Asia.

"I had a date set up for tonight before it went down. And now I'm drinking alone," one user in Singapore complained.

In a company update on Tuesday night local time, the firm said: "We're making solid progress, and we're on track to get things back up and running.

"We'll send you both an email and a push notification once things are fixed."
