Younger children with DKA are at a higher risk of cerebral edema than other groups of patients with the disease. This condition can cause headaches, blackouts, loss of reflexes, retinal detachment in response to light. and may die This condition occurs in approximately 0.3-1.0% of pediatric patients with DKA, with some cases occurring in adolescents. but is rarely found in adults. When it is, there is a 20-50% chance of dying.
