"We've been fighting for more than 10 years to get the truth about what happened to my father acknowledged," says Rosa María Payá.

Ms Payá, 34, never had any doubt that the car crash which killed Cuban dissident Oswaldo Payá and fellow activist Harold Cepero in 2012 was no accident.

"The Cuban regime killed my father and Harold Cepero," she told the BBC after the release this week of a new report - issued by the leading regional human rights entity for the Americas - which concludes that Cuban state agents "participated" in their deaths.

Oswaldo Payá was one of Cuba's main pro-democracy campaigners, who spent decades pressing for human rights and democracy on the Communist-run island, where political opposition is banned by law and actively persecuted.

General Community / Mapping the search for Colombia's plane crash children
« เมื่อ: 17/06/23, 22:19:50 »
When four indigenous children went missing after their plane crashed in the Colombian jungle on 1 May, a massive search operation was launched to track them down.

Forty days after the crash, a search team finally spotted the children, aged 13, nine, five and one, after hearing one of them crying. All four were exhausted, malnourished and dehydrated but alive.

What preceded the good news that the whole nation had been waiting for was an arduous search. The maps below give an idea of its scale.

Where did the children go missing?
The children were travelling together with their mother, 33-year-old Magdalena Mucutuy, in a Cessna 206 light aircraft from their home near Araracuara, in the south of Colombia, to San José del Guaviare.

Millions of people in Texas are bracing for extreme temperatures over the weekend just days after a tornado killed three people in the state.

Temperatures have been climbing since Thursday, when a major storm system swept the southern US, also causing deaths in Florida and Mississippi.

Power is out for 400,000 customers in the South as of Friday evening.

Officials warn that the brutal heat will strain power grids as residents run their air conditioners.

The extreme temperatures come as the US prepares to celebrate the Juneteenth holiday on Monday, a federal holiday.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a heat advisory until Sunday, warning people in Texas that temperatures could feel as hot at 110F (43C) at times.

Cities across Texas have opened up cooling centres for vulnerable residents.

"Anyone ready for Winter yet?" NWS forecasters posted on Twitter on Friday, adding that heat records are expected to be broken over the weekend.

As the danger of storms subsides on Saturday evening, the risk of extreme heat across the region will remain, the NWS said.

The heat comes with a week to go before the summer season officially begins on 21 June.

General Community / Multi-cancer blood test shows real promise in NHS study
« เมื่อ: 3/06/23, 23:47:42 »
The test remains very much a "work in progress", the researchers, from Oxford University, say, but could increase the number of cancers identified.

Often, patients have symptoms, such as weight loss, with a range of possible causes and require multiple tests and hospital visits.

More than 350 of those in the study - the biggest of its kind in patients with suspected cancer symptoms - were subsequently diagnosed with cancer, using traditional methods such as scans and biopsies. About:
A blood test for more than 50 types of cancer has shown real promise in a major NHS trial, researchers say.

The test correctly revealed two out of every three cancers among 5,000 people who had visited their GP with suspected symptoms, in England or Wales.

In 85% of those positive cases, it also pinpointed the original site of cancer. UFABET

The Galleri test looks for distinct changes in bits of genetic code that leak from different cancers. Spotting treatable cancer early can save lives.
75% of those testing positive on the blood test were found to have cancer
2.5% of those testing negative were found to have cancer
Although not accurate enough to "rule in or rule out cancer", the test was really useful for patients lead researcher Prof Mark Middleton told BBC News.

"The test was 85% accurate in detecting the source of the cancer - and that can be really helpful because so many times it is not immediately obvious when you have got the patient in front of you what test is needed to see whether their symptoms are down to cancer," he said.

"With that prediction from the test, we can decide whether to order a scope or a scan and make sure we are giving the right test the first time."

The findings will be presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology conference, in Chicago.

Fifa has opened disciplinary proceedings against Argentina and the Netherlands after their bad-tempered 2022 World Cup quarter-final.

The camps of both sides clashed during a feisty encounter which saw the Dutch come from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 before Argentina won on penalties.

Spanish referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz issued 18 yellows cards - a World Cup record - in the game.

Dutch right-back Denzel Dumfries was sent off after picking up two bookings.

Fifa said its disciplinary committee had opened proceedings against Argentina "due to potential breaches of articles 12 (misconduct of players and officials) and 16 (order and security at matches)".

World football's governing body added: "Additionally, the Fifa disciplinary committee has opened proceedings against the Dutch Football Association due to potential breaches of article 12 of the Fifa disciplinary code in relation to the same match."

As their star player fell to the ground, screaming in pain with his arm bent round to his back, a whole nation breathed in and feared the worst.

Neymar was Brazil's talisman, the one who would lead the national team to glory on home soil at the 2014 World Cup but, after a knee to the back as he challenged for the ball with Colombia's Juan Zuniga, the then 22-year-old's vertebrae was broken and he was out of the tournament.

Brazil won the game to progress to the semi-finals, but there they fell to a humiliating 7-1 loss against Germany. Four years ago, they went out in the quarter-finals to Belgium.

Although Neymar is now 30, he's in some of the best form of his career and there's a real hope this could be his and Brazil's year.

Boxing analyst and former world champion Tony Bellew writes for BBC Sport about Chris Eubank Jr's fight against Conor Benn on Saturday, 8 October at the O2 Arena in London.

Eubank and Benn fight 30 years after their fathers, Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank Sr, faced each other in the ring.

Can massive underdog Benn deal with the weight jump? Will Eubank follow through on his retirement pledge if he loses? Can the sons live up to the legacy left by their fathers?

Imagine if Chris Eubank Jr v Conor Benn is an amazing fight? People won't be talking about Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank Sr anymore, they'll be talking about their sons.

This is a chance for the boys to not only step out of their father's shadows - which they've spent their whole careers trying to do - it's a chance to forge their own legacy.

They won't be Nigel Benn's or Chris Eubank's son anymore. On Saturday night they can start creating their own dynasty.

Premier League clubs have already spent a record amount of almost £1.7bn on players this summer going into Thursday's deadline day - and that is set to rise even further.

The previous record for summer spending had been the £1.43bn spent in 2017.

The increase in spending comes after two consecutive summers shadowed by the Covid pandemic's impact on clubs' income, in which the total fees had dipped to £1.1bn last year.

Deloitte's Sports Business Group's Chris Wood said the level of spending was a sign that "the business models of Premier League clubs are rebounding post-Covid".

In fact, more has been spent this summer than in the last season's January and summer windows combined (£1.44bn).

Seventeen players have so far been signed by Premier League clubs - each of them for a reported fee of more than £30m, which compares to just eight during the 2021 summer transfer window.

The deadline for English Premier League and Football League teams is 23:00 BST on Thursday, 1 September. Scotland's deadline is an hour later.

In Spain - where Barcelona's spending spree has drawn most of the headlines - it is 23:00, in France it is 22:00, Italy's window shuts at 19:00 and Germany's deadline is 17:00 - all times BST.
